Chris Do and the Do’s of the Business of Design

by Althea Ente • October 30, 2018

“What is your Big Hairy Audacious Goal?” Chris Do asks an eager audience, including nine creative minds from RipeConcepts. The Business of Design Workshop last September 29, 2018 featured the LA-based brand strategist and entrepreneur. RC’s envoy to the event took home priceless insights about staying artistic without compromising profitability.

Chris Do’s opening question does not refer to just any peculiar goal. Big Hairy Audacious Goal (B.H.A.G.) suggest specific and measurable objectives that anyone can execute in a year. This proved to be a startling question for a lot of the attendees, who have clearly envisioned the big picture but have struggled to look at the nitty gritty to accomplish it.

Do as Chris Do Does

Do shared how practicing his craft purely as a creative was different when he shifted to an enterprising mindset. His experiences hit home with the audience. The interactive workshop was an opportunity for everyone to share their ambitions and acknowledge the need for an introspective and proactive approach to fulfilling them. For our resident Graphic Specialist Lisha, the event “sparked my willingness to change my mindset and remain steadfast in the pursuit of SMART (tangible) goals.”

For Jairus, also an RC Graphic Specialist, what stuck with him was when Do shared “how to overcome our introvert selves.” He further states that it struck a chord with him when Do said, “Don’t wish for things to be easier, wish for you to be better.” Jairus declares, “We need to up our game as designers in order to cater to what our clients truly need.”

Do is an Emmy-award winning director, designer, strategist, and educator. He is the Chief Strategist and CEO of Blind, Inc., a brand strategy and design company and pioneer in the motion design field. He is also the Executive Producer of The Skool, an online platform that provides video courses in business, creativity, and technology with a focus on user experience. Do constantly uploads educational videos in The Futur, another online channel that teaches the entrepreneurial side of being creative.
